Ambassador Michael W. Cotter is presently publisher of a widely read online journal, American Diplomacy, of which he is also the founder. He is a former U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan in Central Asia. His career with the State Department for many years included Saigon and the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War, assignments in Latin America (Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile), in Africa, and in Turkey, and as director of the office in Washington managing security assistance during the Gulf War. He has taught international politics at the University of North Carolina and Duke University. and serves on advisory boards dealing with health and international affairs.
Born in Wisconsin, Ambassador Cotter is a graduate of Georgetown University, Stanford, and of the University of Michigan Law School. He is a resident of Durham, NC.
