THIS IS A SPECIAL DINNER MEETING AND REQUIRES REGISTRATION. IT IS NOT ONE OF THE SIX REGULAR WACC MEETINGS.

A DINNER MEETING WITH LUIS RUBIO, SPEAKING ON MEXICO'S DEEPENING AND EVERMORE COMPLEX DEMOCRACY.

Luis Rubio, chairman of the Mexican Council of Foreign Relations (COMEXI) and chairman of the Mexico City-based think tank CIDAC, will give a dinner talk on 1/31/18 titled “Mexico’s Deepening and Evermore Complex Democracy.” Rubio is a senior global fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, author of “A Mexican Utopia: The Rule of Law Is Possible,” and a regular columnist in the Reforma newspaper in Mexico City. Mexico is a 120-million person country and the US’s third largest trade partner. Mexico’s 49 consulates in the US constitute the largest consular mission in the world, and CONAPO, an official statistical bureau of the Mexican government, estimates there are up to 36 million “Mexicans abroad” in the US. The Mexican Revolution of 1910-20 was a truly great historical event and founded the country’s modern political system. Rubio argues that the 1985 Mexico City earthquake was a symbolic watershed moment that marked the beginning of the creation of a new and more democratic modern political system that would replace the system created after the Mexican Revolution. This is still a work in progress. There is perhaps no one more qualified to speak on this important topic and this important country for the US than Luis Rubio, and we are lucky to have this distinguished visitor in Charleston. Register now as seating is limited.
