Emma Sky will discuss her new book, 'The Unraveling: High Hopes and Missed Opportunities in Iraq', published in June and thus very recent and very topical. It has been very well reviewed.
Emma Sky is a British Middle East expert with considerable earlier experience in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. She joined the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, serving as Coordinator of Kirkuk in 2003 - 2004. In 2006, she was based in Afghanistan, advising the NATO International Security Force.
Because of her expertise in the Arab world, she was appointed Political Adviser to Gen. Raymond Odierno, Commanding General of U.S. Forces in Iraq from 2007 to 2010.
Her book describes her experience in Kirkuk, her work with the general and with the U.S. military and in Iraq more generally. All this is presented with considerable insight, frequent humor, and sensitivity derived from more years spent in Iraq than virtually any other foreigner.
She is a graduate of Oxford University who also studied in Egypt and Israel. She is a fluent Arabic speaker. She has twice been honored by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of her service in Iraq.
A reception will follow the talk at which Emma Sky's book will be available for purchase and for her to sign.
