Reception at 5:15pm, Speaker at 6:00pm

A change of  administration is always a key event affecting U.S. foreign policy. New leadership from the President and senior officials across the U.S. government means a new outlook and priorities, continuity with but also departures from inherited policy in steering our relations with foreign countries. All this in a rapidly changing international environment.

Following a career of more than 30 years with the State Department, Ambassador Jerry Lanier is well placed to discuss the challenging global landscape our new President and his team will address. Until very recently he was Acting U.S.  Ambassador to Sudan, an exceedingly troubled country, and was previously Ambassador to Uganda.

His overseas career brought him to the Philippines, Thailand, and Bosnia where he was Political Advisor to the Commander of U.S. forces.  He was deputy Ambassador in Ghana. Responsibilities in Washington, included service as Korea desk officer, as a key official dealing with Pakistan and Afghanistan, and working  with Congress on African policy. He was Acting Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism in the State Department and  Foreign Policy Advisor in Stuttgart, Germany to the U.S. military’s Africa Command.

Ambassador Lanier is a graduate of the University of North Carolina where he also received his MA.
