Mr. Scott Worden will be our WACC speaker for Wednesday, Nov. 8.  He will speak on 'Afghanistan - What have we achieved over 16 years of America's longest war? What are current and future prospects as we deploy more U.S. troops?'

Scott Worden is director of Afghanistan and Central Asia Programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington.  He has many years of Afghan experience in the field and in Washington dealing with military and civilian  officials as director in the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction; senior policy advisor on Afghanistan at USAID; and twice as a UN-appointed Commissioner for Afghan elections. He has extensive experience in reconstruction, democracy and governance issues. He is a graduate of Colgate University and Harvard Law School.

USIP is a federal institute specializing in all matters relating to conflict situations.

This is an important issue as Scott Worden's address will follow President Trump's recent decision, after much hesitation, to increase our military presence in Afghanistan. The President responded to mounting Taliban attacks throughout the country, including a spate of large suicide bombings in Kabul. There is much concern in Washington over the ability of the Afghan government to cope with the renewed and deadly pressure.
