The World Affairs Council of Charleston (SC) announces its next Business Luncheon Program

The Concorde

The Concorde

The Future of Commercial Aviation and Supersonic Flight

The Concorde Supersonic Jet could cruise at Mach 2.02 or around 1,340 miles per hour at an altitude of 60,000 feet. However, sonic boom restrictions, the increasing cost of maintenance, and safety issues led to the Concorde program’s ending in 2003. To date, no replacement has filled the void. As time passed, it seemed as if faster than the speed of sound commercial flight might be nothing more than a short-lived experiment.

But now, a number of companies are looking to continue the Concorde's legacy with a new generation of supersonic jets  that will change how we travel long distances. Lockheed Martin is collaborating with NASA on technology that will reduce sonic booms to a "thud." Other companies such as Boom Technology, Aerion Corporation and Spike Aircraft are working to revive the reality of supersonic flight.

The World Affairs Council of Charleston is delighted to provide a luncheon program highlighting the latest advances in commercial supersonic design, development, and testing. David Hyde, Director of Environmental Policy from the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) based in Arlington, Virginia will provide an overview of what the future of supersonic travel might look like, and the work needed to overcome challenges faced by the Concorde. Then, representatives from the aviation industry will join us for a panel discussion on the future of commercial aviation and potential opportunities for Low Country entrepreneurs. Panel members will be announced.
